Award ASTRA FARMACEUTICI 1994 for the manuscript: “Selective spinal anaesthesia (SSA) in day-hospital surgery: haemodynamic evaluation.”
SIAARTI Award 1999 for the abstract: “Aspiration of dead space: a strategy to ventilate at low tidal volumes”
From 1996 He has been member of an international research group on mechanical ventilation joining the Universities of Napoli, Lund, and Paris XII (Creteil). The collaboration has given the opportunity to plan and perform experimental studies in complex animal models and clinical studies in critically ill patients, together with several multi-centre studies, which have been published on important peer reviewed journals. Moreover, an innovative system of ventilation aimed at the reduction of airway dead space (ASPIDS) was developed. Leader of a research group at the University Federico II, in the last years Prof. De Robertis has been involved in the planning, management and coordination of several clinical and experimental researches. Recently, He has coordinated, as Italian national coordinator, the ESA multicentric study PROVHILO and the ESICM consensus study WELPICUS. Both studies have been recently published on Lancet and Am J Respir Crit Care Med.

Prof. De Robertis has been responsible since 2003 of the Intensive Care Unit. The ICU of the University Hospital Federico II is a general (medical-surgical) 14 beds unit with a case mix of on average 500 complex patients/years (70% with SAPS >10). The majority of patients are affected by ARF/ARDS, severe sepsis, cardiovascular failure, trauma, surgical and neurosurgical complicated patients.
The ICU of the Federico II Hospital is equipped with the last generation monitoring and supportive devices, ventilators, facilities, and drugs.
Since 2009 the ICU is among the 14 Italian reference ICUs for the management of complex cases of respiratory failure, requiring special techniques of mechanical ventilation (HFOV) and extracorporeal support (Decap, ECMO).
